Dental Health Tips for Expecting Women

Dental Health Tips for Expecting WomenAs an expecting mother, you are probably taking the right steps to keep your baby healthy. However, do not forget how important it is to maintain good dental health. Your dental care can affect the fetus. For instance, dental issues can increase the risk of pregnancy complications. The changes your body goes through during pregnancy can make you more prone to developing dental problems.

Since pregnant women have an increased amount of blood flow, they must watch out for signs of gingivitis and periodontal disease. In fact, gingivitis is the most common dental issue that pregnant women experience. To lessen your chance of developing gingivitis, you must step up your oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth after every meal, and floss your teeth daily. If you have morning sickness, make sure to rinse your mouth out each time you get sick.

Some women develop pregnancy tumors, which are noncancerous growths that form on the gums. These tumors are the result of gingivitis and excess dental plaque. Most of these growths will go away when the woman gives birth. If your pregnancy tumors do not go away, consult with your dentist.

Make sure to let the dentist know that you are pregnant before having any dental work done. Dental cleanings are safe, but you should still wait until the second trimester to reduce the risk of developing complications. You should also wait until the baby is born to have any cosmetic dentistry work done. Dr. Elyson, dentist in Northridge, can answer any of your questions or concerns.
