How to Clean Your Invisalign Aligners
Good dental hygiene is essential during orthodontic treatment. Plaque and debris can damage your teeth and gums and lead to cavities and periodontal disease. However, brushing and flossing your teeth is not enough. Our Invisalign provider also recommends that you clean your Invisalign aligners.
Your aligners need to be removed each time you eat or drink, but they can still accumulate bacteria that can cause discoloration and odors. Keeping your smile clean, healthy, and smelling nice is easy with a few simple steps, including:
- Rinse your aligners when you take them out to remove saliva and plaque
- When you are not wearing your aligners, soak them in Invisalign cleaning crystals, retainer cleaner, denture cleaner, or similar approved liquid
- Clean your teeth thoroughly before re-inserting your aligners/
- Brush your aligners gently using a soft-bristled brush and a gentle, clear antibacterial soap
When you are wearing your aligners, do not drink anything other than water. Many drinks and foods can cause your aligners to develop stains and odors. Do not use toothpaste or abrasive cleaners on your aligners: these can create dull, rough spots in which bacteria can grow. Each time you remove your aligners, be sure to store them safely. If you are eating, do not put them on a napkin, which increases the likelihood of them being lost or thrown away. Keep them stored properly until you are done so that they are not lost.
Proper care can ensure your treatment proceeds exactly as it should, and that your teeth look and feel great throughout the Invisalign process. Call our dental office today to learn more or to schedule your appointment.
