Men and their Oral Health

Men and their Oral HealthAccording to researchers, men are less likely than women are to take care of their teeth properly. Scientists have linked good oral health with longevity, so men should start taking better care of their teeth. Most men only visit the dentist when they have a problem. To make matters worse, studies have found that the average man only brushes his teeth 1.9 times per day and will lose 5.4 teeth by his early seventies. The statistics are even worse for men who smoke; in fact, male smokers can expect to lose 12 teeth by their 72nd birthday.

Compared to women, men are also more likely to develop periodontal disease and oral cancer. Researchers have discovered a link between gum disease and cardiovascular disease; therefore, both men and women should visit Dr. Elyson immediately if they have any gum disease symptoms. A few of the most common symptoms include bad breath, bleeding gums and loose teeth. Dr. Elyson, Northridge dentist, will treat the gum disease before it becomes worse.

Many men take medication for high blood pressure, which can reduce salivary flow and cause dry mouth. Since saliva reduces bacteria in the mouth, many men have an increased risk of developing cavities. Besides that, men who participate in sports also have a greater chance of traumatizing their mouth. Those who take part in contact sports should always wear a mouthpiece to protect their teeth.

Men need to take better care of their teeth. They can start by flossing daily and brushing their teeth at least twice a day. To improve their oral health, men should also visit the dentist twice a year for dental cleanings. In addition, those who smoke need to kick the habit.
